USA Defeats Dominican Republic in Straight Sets to Open Week 2
Team USA started Week 2 of the 2026 FIVB Women’s Volleyball Nations League with a dominant straight-sets victory over the Dominican Republic, 25-20, 25-19, 25-12, on Wednesday at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.
The Americans controlled the match from start to finish, using a balanced offense and solid defense to limit the Dominican Republic’s opportunities. After a competitive first set, the U.S. pulled away decisively in the third, outscoring their opponents 25-12 to complete the sweep in just over 70 minutes.
Jordan Thompson led the way for Team USA with a match-high 12 points, including 10 attacks and two service aces, while also contributing 10 digs. Dana Rettke and Logan Eggleston each added 10 points, with Rettke making her presence felt in the middle. Stephany Samedy delivered key attacks to help close out the match, while libero Morgan Hentz was flawless in reception, successfully handling all nine of her attempts.
The United States broke open the first set with a 7-2 run after a 10-all tie and never trailed in the second set after building a 19-10 advantage. In the third set, they turned a timeout by the Dominican Republic into a dominant run, highlighted by Thompson’s service ace and Rettke’s quick attacks.
No player from the Dominican Republic reached double figures in scoring. Yonkaira Peña Isabel led her team with eight points, while the rest of the squad struggled to find rhythm as the U.S. extended its winning streak.
“We knew the Dominican Republic was going to be a strong team, so we had to prepare well. It’s a new roster this week, so we focused on practicing, training, and gelling as a group,” said Thompson.
The United States will look to extend its win streak to four matches when it faces Czechia on Thursday at 4 p.m. The Dominican Republic, meanwhile, will try to end its five-game losing streak against Serbia at the same time.
