Chinese Taipei made history on Saturday, advancing to its first-ever AVC Women’s Volleyball Cup final after a commanding straight-sets victory over Kazakhstan, 25-23, 25-16, 25-13, at the Candon City Arena.

The win guarantees the Taiwanese side at least a silver medal — an upgrade from their bronze medal finish last year — and puts them one step away from claiming their maiden continental title.

Coming off a tough loss to South Korea, the world No. 34 Chinese Taipei squad shook off an early challenge from Kazakhstan before dominating the final two sets to complete the breakthrough.

Team captain Liao Yijen was elated after the historic achievement.

“Very happy, and it's the first time that we are going to the final so I’m really excited. This game I think everybody and Yichi (Chang) played very good,” she said.

Tsai Yuchun led the attack with 18 points (17 attacks, 1 ace), while 20-year-old opposite hitter Yang Yichi bounced back strongly with 14 points, including three service aces. Hsu Wanyu and Yeh Yuwen added seven and six points respectively.

Chinese Taipei dominated the match statistically, winning the attack battle 42-32, leading 5-1 in aces, and forcing 25 opponent errors while committing only 12 of their own. The team finished pool play with a strong 4-1 record.

Kazakhstan’s impressive run, which included a stunning upset over defending champion Vietnam to snap their 23-match winning streak, came to an end. Tatyana Yatskiv led the Kazakhs with 12 points, while Kristina Belova added 10.

Despite the loss, Kazakhstan will still compete for bronze on Sunday afternoon.
