Jovic Tops Eala Again to Reach HSBC Championships Quarterfinals
Alex Eala’s impressive run on grass came to an end on Wednesday as she fell to world No. 19 Iva Jovic in the Round of 16 at the 2026 HSBC Championships, held at Queen’s Club in London.
The American teenager took control from the start and never looked back, defeating the Filipina 6-2, 6-1 to extend her winning streak over Eala.
The outcome mirrored their previous encounter just two weeks ago at Roland Garros, where Jovic also beat Eala in straight sets. Despite the shift from clay to grass at the Andy Murray Arena, Eala struggled to counter Jovic’s heavy groundstrokes and aggressive baseline game.
Currently ranked No. 33, Eala was playing her seventh grass-court singles match in just over a week, but she could not sustain consistency against the higher-ranked American, who dictated rallies throughout the match.
Jovic set the tone immediately, breaking serve in the opening game to seize early control. Although Eala managed to hold serve shortly after, Jovic surged mid-set, winning four of the next five games to take the first set in 35 minutes.
The second set followed a similar pattern, with Jovic racing to a 5-1 lead and closing out the match in 77 minutes. She finished with 26 winners and conceded only a single service break.
Both players entered the Round of 16 in strong form: Eala had advanced with a straight-sets victory over Zhang Shuai, while Jovic defeated Croatia’s Antonia Ružić in her opening match.
