Josh Ybañez reclaimed his place atop the UAAP Collegiate Men’s Volleyball awards as he captured his third Most Valuable Player trophy in Season 88.

The awarding ceremony was held on Saturday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena prior to Game 2 of the Finals between National University and Far Eastern University.

After missing out on individual honors last season due to injuries, the University of Santo Tomas star returned stronger than ever, posting a league-high 90.192 statistical points (SP) to become the first UST men’s volleyball player to win three MVP awards.

“This MVP is a motivation and a confidence boost for me to do better and lead the team,” Ybañez said. “It’s not my main goal, but I’m grateful for it. This is a bonus from God.”

The 23-year-old outside hitter anchored UST’s offense and defense all season, finishing as the league’s second-leading scorer with 278 points. He ranked fourth in spiking (45.19%), second in aces (0.35 per set), and second in reception efficiency (65.68%).

Ybañez also confirmed he will play out his final year with the Golden Spikers, aiming to help end UST’s 16-year championship drought.

“It’s the love I have for my school. It’s my way of giving back,” he added.
