Underdog Road Warriors Hold Win-Once Edge Over Top-Seeded TNT
It’s a do-or-die night for TNT as it aims to defend its PBA Commissioner's Cup crown, facing top-seeded NLEX in the quarterfinals’ opening clash at Ninoy Aquino Stadium this evening.
The first game tips off at 5:15 p.m., drawing the spotlight to the reigning champions as they fight to stay alive in the conference.
TNT, however, has struggled during the midseason stretch. Integrating Bol Bol’s unique style with the local core has been a challenge, and the team never fully found its rhythm in the eliminations. Their woes were compounded by a three-game losing streak to close out the round, including a 93-86 loss to Barangay Ginebra just last Sunday.
This inconsistent form raises doubts about TNT’s chances of repeating as champions, especially against the motivated Road Warriors, who are eager to capitalize on their win-once advantage.
Still, Kings coach Tim Cone believes the matchup may favor TNT. “From Coach Chot’s perspective… I don’t pretend to know what he thinks, but I think they played a good game; they wanted to play a good game. Losing wasn’t a huge issue,” Cone said. “I think they probably like this matchup against NLEX. It’s going to be a really interesting series. Talk N Text can turn things around quickly and find themselves in the Finals.”
TNT has proven capable against NLEX, having beaten them once during the eliminations, 103-97 on March 22 in Antipolo, with Bol scoring 40 points and grabbing 15 rebounds to spark a late rally. The Tropa are hoping to repeat history in the playoffs.
NLEX, led by coach Jong Uichico and star Robert Bolick, also seeks redemption. Their franchise experienced heartbreak in 2019 when they failed to convert a twice-to-beat advantage in the Governors’ Cup, falling twice to NorthPort and seeing Christian Standhardinger shine en route to the semis. Now, the Road Warriors aim to rewrite that narrative.
Despite that, the TigerScore sportsbook lists NLEX as a +5.5 underdog for Game 1, with an over/under of 198.0. Wagers can be placed here
Later, at 7:30 p.m., fourth-seed Meralco and fifth-seed Magnolia face off in the main event. The Bolts aim to secure a quick advance to allow more recovery time, but Magnolia, fresh off a win against Meralco last Sunday, presents a tough challenge.
Magnolia is riding a three-game winning streak and hopes to extend the series to a decisive third game on Saturday. “Anyone at the top is tough for a reason. We just have to be ready. If it’s Meralco, we know we have to beat them three times; we’ve already won once,” said LA Tenorio.
TigerScore lists Meralco as a -2.5 favorite, with an over/under of 192.0.
