Eala Caps Birmingham Comeback with WTA 125 Title Triumph
From an early exit to championship success, Alex Eala completed a stunning turnaround at the Edgbaston Priory Club, claiming the 2026 Lexus Birmingham Open crown on Sunday (Monday in Manila).
A year after bowing out in the opening round at the same event, the top-seeded Filipina returned with renewed purpose, defeating fifth seed Nikola Bartůňková of the Czech Republic, 5-7, 6-3, 7-5, in a gripping final.
What started as a brief doubles partnership earlier in the week—where both players exited in the first round against the second seeds—evolved into a tightly contested singles battle, with neither newcomer to the matchup able to gain a clear psychological edge on Centre Court.
Eala showed early intent from the baseline but struggled with her serve at key junctures, including four double faults, allowing Bartůňková to stay within reach. The Czech eventually secured the first breakthrough, breaking in the 11th game before serving out the opening set 7-5.
Bartůňková carried that momentum into the second set with an early break, but Eala responded immediately to level the score. From there, the Filipina found her rhythm, using precise angles and consistent groundstrokes to dictate play and force errors from her opponent.
After pulling ahead 5-2, Eala held off a late push before closing out the set in the ninth game to force a deciding third set.
The final set proved a test of nerve. After falling 1-2 and facing double break points, Eala held firm, then turned a 0-30 deficit in the fifth game into a pivotal break for a 3-2 lead. She extended her advantage to 5-3, but Bartůňková fought back to level at 5-5.
In the decisive moments, Eala once again delivered under pressure, breaking in the 11th game before serving out the match to complete a 2-hour, 38-minute victory.
The win marked several milestones for the 19-year-old, including her first victory over a Czech opponent after 14 attempts and her second WTA 125 title, following her 2025 breakthrough in Guadalajara.
The result is projected to lift Eala to a career-high world No. 33, setting her up with strong momentum heading into a busy stretch that includes the WTA 500 HSBC Championships and Wimbledon later this month.
