South Korea’s height, experience, and offensive depth proved overwhelming for Alas Pilipinas, as the hosts suffered a straight-sets loss, 16-25, 18-25, 22-25, in the 2026 AVC Women’s Volleyball Cup on Tuesday at the Candon City Arena.

Going up against a Korean squad that competed in the FIVB Women’s Volleyball Nations League less than a year ago, the Filipinas showed resilience throughout the match, particularly in the third set when they pushed their opponents to the limit before falling short.

Alas looked poised to force a fourth set after taking a 20-18 lead, sparked by Alyssa Solomon’s strong attacks. However, South Korea responded with a crucial 6-0 run behind the leadership of Kang Sowhi Kang, who delivered key points down the stretch to turn the tide and give her team a 24-20 match-point advantage.

The Filipinas continued to fight, with Ara Galang scoring off the block and Niña Ytang producing a timely rejection at the net to erase two match points and keep the contest alive.

South Korea ultimately sealed the victory when Lee Juah finished a rally with a slide attack, preserving her team’s unbeaten record and keeping them tied with Chinese Taipei atop Pool A at 3-0.

“It's unfortunate, but it was encouraging that we were able to keep pace and stay close. We just lacked that final push on the last point,” Galang said after helping ignite the Philippines’ late rally in the third set.

The defeat dropped Alas Pilipinas to 2-2 in the standings, leaving their semifinal bid hanging in the balance. The Filipinas must now beat unbeaten Chinese Taipei on Thursday at 3 p.m. at the same venue and hope other results go their way to remain in the hunt for a top-four finish.

Thea Gagate paced the Philippines with nine points on five attacks, three blocks, and one ace, while Niña Ytang added eight. Alyssa Valdez and Alyssa Solomon chipped in seven points each in the one-hour, 14-minute match.

For South Korea, Kang led all scorers with 19 points, while Lee Juah and Na Hyunsoo contributed 12 points apiece.
