Alas Girls’ comeback bid falls short against Peru

Alas Pilipinas Girls saw their two-game winning streak come to an end after falling to Peru, 28-26, 22-25, 23-25, 20-25, on Tuesday morning (Manila time) in Pool B of the 2026 FIVB Volleyball Girls’ U17 World Championship at Liceo Particular Mixto San Felipe.

The Philippines fought through an extended opening set to take an early lead but could not sustain its momentum as Peru won the next three frames to complete the comeback.

The defeat dropped Alas Pilipinas to 2-2 in Pool B and fourth place with six points. Despite the setback, the young Filipinas remain in contention for a spot in the Round of 16.

The Philippines can keep its knockout-stage hopes alive with a victory over Venezuela on Wednesday at 2 a.m. (Manila time).

Alas Pilipinas appeared poised to take control in the third set after racing to a 15-5 advantage. Peru, however, mounted a remarkable comeback, closing the frame with a 20-8 run to overturn the deficit and take a 2-1 lead.

The Peruvians carried the momentum into the fourth set, pulling away from the Philippines to secure the victory.

The win improved Peru to 3-1 and moved the team into second place in Pool B behind unbeaten China, which remained perfect at 4-0.

Sharina Rhyza Lleses once again led the Philippine offense with 18 points, all from attacks, while also recording 16 digs.

Caera Celis added 17 points on 15 attacks and two aces, along with nine digs. Xyz Rayco contributed 12 points, 22 digs, and six excellent receptions.

Nahir Cuerva paced Peru with 19 points.
