Alas Women fall to Thailand in SEA V Cup second leg

Alas Pilipinas struggled against a veteran-powered Thailand squad, falling in straight sets, 19-25, 17-25, 19-25, in the second leg of the 2026 SEA V Cup on Friday at Chiang Mai Stadium.

Thailand, which swept the opening leg to secure its ninth SEA V Cup title, strengthened its lineup with the return of veterans Pornpun Guedpard, Pimpichaya Kokram, and Chatchu-On Moksri.

Guedpard immediately made an impact by controlling Thailand's offense as the hosts pulled away late in the opening set. After the Philippines stayed within 19-17, Thailand closed the frame with six of the next eight points to take a 1-0 lead.

The Thais continued their dominance in the second set, breaking away after a close 5-4 start. Thailand unleashed a 12-3 run, highlighted by an Erika Santos error that extended the lead to 17-7, and never looked back.

Alas Pilipinas showed more fight in the third set, even taking a 13-12 advantage. However, two errors from Alyssa Solomon allowed Thailand to regain momentum with a four-point run and move ahead, 16-13.

The hosts maintained control from there to complete the sweep and hand Alas Pilipinas its fourth consecutive loss in the tournament.

Nina Ytang led the Philippines with eight points on six attacks and two blocks. Solomon added six points, while Eya Laure and Santos finished with five each.

Dawn Catindig provided defensive stability with 18 excellent digs and four excellent receptions.

Janthawisut Sasipapron and Kokram paced Thailand with 10 points apiece, while Guedpard directed the Thai offense throughout the match.

Alas Pilipinas will look to end its losing streak on Saturday when it faces Vietnam, as the Filipinas continue their search for their first win of the tournament.
