USA Dominates Italy in Straight-Set Statement Victory
Team USA delivered a powerful straight-sets victory over reigning champions Italy, winning 27–25, 25–20, 25–16 on Saturday at the Philsports Arena during the third day of Week 2 in the 2026 FIVB Volleyball Nations League.
The Americans asserted their dominance after weathering early pressure, pulling away decisively in the third set to complete the match in just 1 hour and 14 minutes. It was a clear statement win against one of the top teams in the world.
The final set briefly tightened when Sarah Fahr’s strong middle attack cut the lead to 18–16, but the United States responded with a devastating 7–0 run, sparked by Stephanie Samedy and finished off by Simone Wank, to slam the door on any Italian comeback.
The first two sets were competitive battles between two elite squads, but the Americans were sharper in the clutch, capitalizing on key errors and converting close rallies into momentum-shifting runs.
Samedy led the U.S. offense with 12 points, all from attacks, providing crucial production especially during the decisive stretch. Notably, she plays club volleyball in Italy’s Serie A1 with Imoco Volley Conegliano, adding extra familiarity to the matchup.
Madi Banks also impressed in a starting role, chipping in 11 points (10 attacks, 1 block) and emphasizing the importance of discipline against top competition.
“We’re just really locked in to our game plan. We really focused on what we can control on our side. Obviously, the opposition is a great team, so, yeah, we just had to do it,” said the 25-year-old outside hitter.
“We think that consistent pressure — just being persistent with our service pressure, defending, and converting — was what worked for us,” Banks added.
The United States relied on strong individual performances across the board, while Italy remained competitive for long stretches but faltered with costly mistakes at critical moments. Adigwe led the Italians with 13 points (8 attacks, 4 blocks), while Fahr and Omoruyi each contributed 8 points.
With the victory, the USA improved to 6–1 and strengthened its position atop the pool standings.
The Americans will now face Serbia on Sunday at 12 noon as they aim to complete a perfect week in Pool 5.
Italy dropped to 5–2 and will look to bounce back later on Saturday against Japan at 8 p.m.
