Alex Eala Upsets World No. 2 Rybakina in Berlin
Alex Eala picked up another high-profile victory, defeating world No. 2 Elena Rybakina, 7-5, 6-4, in the second round of the WTA 500 Berlin Tennis Open on Thursday.
The 21-year-old Filipina showed composure and resilience to overcome the powerful Kazakh star on grass, marking the second time she has beaten a current world No. 2 in her career.
After falling behind 4-2 in the first set, Eala broke back and took control in the closing games to steal the opener. She carried that momentum into the second set, breaking early to build a 3-1 lead and maintaining her level to close out the match.
The win sends Eala into the quarterfinals, where she will face sixth seed Elina Svitolina.
This victory comes shortly after Eala captured the WTA 125 Lexus Birmingham Open title two weeks ago. It also reverses her straight-sets loss to Rybakina at the Italian Open in May.
