Eala’s Berlin Run Ends in Semifinals After Loss to Noskova
Alex Eala's breakout campaign at the WTA 500 Berlin Open concluded in the semifinals on Sunday morning (Manila time), as the Filipina star fell to World No. 13 Linda Noskova of the Czech Republic, 6-2, 6-4.
Despite entering the match high on confidence after back-to-back upsets over higher-ranked players, Eala was unable to overcome Noskova’s power and consistency. The Czech advanced to the final in just one hour and nine minutes at the Steffi Graf Stadion.
The matchup was a continuation of a long-standing rivalry that dates back to their junior days. Eala had previously defeated Noskova in the 2018 Les Petits As final and the 2020 French Open girls’ quarterfinals. However, Noskova has dominated their professional encounters, including a straight-sets win at Indian Wells earlier this year.
Noskova took control early, breaking Eala in the opening game. Although Eala broke back immediately, the Czech regained the upper hand with aggressive baseline play and secured a second break to lead 3-2. She cruised through the rest of the first set in just 29 minutes.
The second set was tighter, with Eala showing resilience. She fought back from an early break to level at 3-3, then held serve to take a 4-3 lead. However, Noskova raised her level in the decisive moments, winning the final three games to seal the victory.
Noskova will now face World No. 4 Jessica Pegula in the final. Pegula earlier stunned top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka in the other semifinal.
Despite the loss, Eala’s run to her first WTA 500 semifinal marks another significant milestone in her rapid rise. The 21-year-old will next compete at the WTA 500 Bad Homburg Open, where she received a wildcard into the singles main draw. She is also scheduled to partner with seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams in the doubles event.
