Angels Hold Off Late Rally to Secure Third Seed
Biñan-Tatak Gel capped its 2026 Women’s Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (WMPBL) regular season with a hard-fought 75-71 victory over RK Hoops-Quezon City 10ACT on Sunday at the Alonte Sports Arena.
The Angels looked poised for a blowout after surging to a commanding 19-point lead (67-48). However, RK Hoops-Quezon City mounted a fierce comeback, sparked by Tantoy Ferrer, who led a 23-8 run that cut the deficit to just four points in the closing stages.
Biñan-Tatak Gel steadied itself when Monique Del Carmen knocked down a crucial three-pointer, pushing the lead back to 75-64 with 1:14 left. The Angels then held firm to weather the late surge and seal the win.
“Ano talaga, prepared ‘yung RK Hoops, and knowing them, may mga baon talaga ‘yan sa game. In-expect din talaga namin na magiging mahirap ‘yung laban and buti nanalo kami,” said Angels head coach Jack Azcueta.
Luisa San Juan paced Biñan-Tatak Gel with 17 points and five rebounds, while Del Carmen added 14 points and seven boards. Danica Pacia contributed 11 points and five rebounds, and Ara Abaca posted 10 points and six rebounds as the Angels finished the eliminations with a 7-3 record, clinching the third seed.
Despite finishing with a 3-7 record, RK Hoops-Quezon City 10ACT secured the fourth seed and a twice-to-beat advantage in the quarterfinals.
Ferrer delivered a standout double-double with 25 points and 20 rebounds in the loss, while Natasha Alcantara added 15 points for the Quezon City side.
