Alex Eala continued her sensational run at the WTA 500 Berlin Open, defeating World No. 8 Elina Svitolina of Ukraine 6-3, 6-4 in the quarterfinals on Friday to reach the semifinals of a WTA 500 event for the first time in her career.

Buoyed by her stunning upset over World No. 2 Elena Rybakina in the previous round, the 21-year-old Filipina showed no signs of fatigue as she dismantled another elite opponent with confidence and composure.

Eala wasted no time taking control, breaking Svitolina early to race to a 3-0 lead in the first set. Although the experienced Ukrainian fought back to close the gap to 4-3, Eala responded immediately with a break of her own and closed out the set in just 33 minutes.

The momentum carried seamlessly into the second set. Eala broke again in the opening game to go up 2-0. Svitolina managed to level the score at 2-2, but the Filipina raised her level once more, breaking twice to surge ahead 5-2.

The former World No. 3 mounted a late push, winning two straight games to make it 5-4, but Eala stayed composed and sealed the victory in one hour and 23 minutes.

The win marks Eala’s second consecutive victory over a Top-10 player this week and further cements her status as one of the rising stars on the WTA Tour.

Eala will face World No. 13 Linda Noskova of the Czech Republic in the semifinals. The matchup gives the Filipina an opportunity for revenge after Noskova defeated her in straight sets at Indian Wells earlier this season.
