6 teams begin PVL Invitational grind

The Premier Volleyball League Invitational tournament begins Monday at the Araneta Coliseum, featuring six teams competing over eight days for the title. With matches packed tightly into the schedule, the competition will test not just skill but endurance, recovery, and composure.

Defending champion PLDT opens its title defense against Thailand's EST Cola, while Creamline faces a revamped Nxled side, and Farm Fresh takes on Ho Chi Minh of Vietnam in a triple-header. The compressed format has drawn comparisons to the early PVL seasons, with back-to-back games demanding strong recovery between matches.

Creamline middle blocker Jaja Santiago emphasized the importance of recovery, noting that the key is how well teams can bounce back from each successive match. Santiago, who has experience in Japan's competitive league, recorded six points in Creamline's recent win over Galeries Tower, signaling her potential impact for the Cool Smashers as they aim to reclaim the Invitational crown after finishing third last year.

The tournament's intensity is expected to separate contenders from the rest, with team depth and mutual support becoming crucial as fatigue sets in. Creamline's first major test comes at 4 p.m. against a talent-loaded Nxled squad featuring Brooke Van Sickle, Myla Pablo, MJ Phillips, and new recruits Gel Cayuna and Jackie Acuña.

The 1:30 p.m. matchup between PLDT and EST Cola sets the tone for the day. PLDT boasts a strong lineup with Savi Davison, Kim Dy, Alleiah Malaluan, and middle blockers Majoy Baron and Mika Reyes, but they face an unfamiliar and tricky opponent in EST Cola, whose game relies on speed, tactical creativity, and fighting spirit—qualities that can be especially dangerous against a team still adjusting to the compressed schedule.
