Huskers Surge Early, Defeat Heroes in MPBL Opener
Quezon Province triumphed over Biñan, 66-59, in their debut match of the 2026 Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) Season on Tuesday at the Caloocan Sports Complex.
The Huskers held a steady lead throughout the game, at one point leading by as much as 58-48 midway through the fourth quarter. They dominated for 34 minutes and 25 seconds, proving their readiness to contend once again for both the South Division title and the national championship.
Cyrus Tabi, a key offseason acquisition, delivered a crucial three-pointer with 1:44 left to stretch Quezon’s lead to 66-57, sealing the win for the Huskers and handing Biñan Tatak Gel their second loss in three games during the round-robin phase of the 18-team tournament.
Filling the role left by L-Jay Gonzales, Tabi scored 11 points, including three triples, and also registered eight assists and four rebounds to guide Quezon’s well-rounded offense.
“I gave my best,” said Tabi, noting his quick adaptation and comfort within the system led by head coach Eric Gonzales.
Mike Canete led the Huskers with 14 points and four rebounds, while Will McAloney added 12 points and seven boards. Judel Fuentes also contributed 11 points and two rebounds, showcasing Quezon’s depth and unity as back-to-back South Division champions.
Biñan struggled at the free-throw line, converting just 4-of-13 attempts (30.8%), while Quezon fared better, hitting 11-of-16 (61.1%).
Nic Cabanero, former standout of the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers, led Biñan with 16 points, including eight in the fourth quarter, along with six rebounds and two assists. Pamboy Raymundo added 13 points, four rebounds, and two assists, while Kenny Roger Rocacurva contributed 12 points and seven rebounds.
Despite losing the rebound battle 36-28, Quezon’s superior ball movement (23 assists to 15), defense (9 steals to 3), and fewer turnovers (13 to 17) made the difference.
The tournament moves to the Pasay Astrodome on Wednesday, with upcoming matchups including Meycauayan vs. Quezon City at 4 p.m., Batangas vs. Cebu at 6 p.m., and Basilan vs. Pasay at 8 p.m.
