Alex Eala and tennis legend Venus Williams enjoyed a successful start to their partnership, cruising to a straight-sets victory to reach the quarterfinals of the WTA 500 Bad Homburg Open in Germany on Wednesday.

The Filipino standout and the seven-time Grand Slam singles champion defeated the team of Catherine Harrison and Alexandra Osborne, 6-3, 6-4, in the opening round of the women’s doubles competition.

Despite playing together for the first time, Eala and Williams quickly developed chemistry against a pair that had already competed in three tournaments together earlier this month.

The newly formed duo came out firing, racing to a 4-0 lead in the opening set behind aggressive returns and effective net play. They maintained their momentum throughout the frame and sealed the set in just 30 minutes.

The second set was more closely contested as Harrison and Osborne settled into the match. Both teams held serve through the opening six games before Eala and Williams secured a crucial break to move ahead, 4-3.

Their opponents responded immediately with a break of their own to level the set at 4-4, setting up a tense closing stretch.

With the match hanging in the balance, Eala and Williams delivered when it mattered most. They earned a key break in a tightly fought ninth game that featured several deuces before confidently serving out the match to book their place in the next round.

The victory advances Eala and Williams to the quarterfinals, where they will face the tournament’s second-seeded pair of Tereza Mihalikova and Olivia Nicholls.

Mihalikova and Nicholls enter the matchup in strong form after capturing the doubles title at the WTA 500 HSBC Championships earlier this month. The pair also reached the final of the WTA 500 Abu Dhabi Open this season, where they eliminated Eala and Indonesia’s Janice Tjen in the semifinals.

Eala and Williams will aim to keep their impressive partnership rolling as they take on one of the tournament’s top-seeded tandems for a place in the semifinals.
