Alapag makes coaching debut as NLEX opens Governors' Cup against Macau
A new chapter begins for Jimmy Alapag as he makes his Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) head coaching debut when NLEX takes on Macau in the opening game of the Season 50 Governors' Cup on Friday at the Ynares Center in Antipolo.
The Road Warriors and the Giant Pandas square off at 7:30 p.m., with Alapag returning to the local sidelines after spending six years with the Sacramento Kings as a player development coach.
One of Philippine basketball's most decorated figures, the 2011 PBA Most Valuable Player was named NLEX head coach in late June, succeeding veteran mentor Jong Uichico, who was then serving with Gilas Pilipinas during Window 3 of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifiers.
Alapag takes over a team that fell short of the Commissioner's Cup semifinals despite carrying a twice-to-beat advantage in the quarterfinals, where it was eliminated by TNT. The Tropang Giga eventually advanced to the Finals before losing to Barangay Ginebra in seven games.
Leading NLEX's campaign are Robert Bolick, promising young standouts JB Bahio and Xyrus Torres, and returning import Dequan Jones, who is back after reinforcing the Road Warriors during the 2024 Governors' Cup.
The Road Warriors will be looking to kick off the conference with a victory against Macau, which returns as a guest team for its second straight PBA tournament after debuting in the Commissioner's Cup.
TigerScore Sportsbook lists NLEX as a 9.5-point favorite, with the over/under set at 209.5.
Macau hopes to bounce back from a difficult first conference under head coach Marcus Elliott, a familiar face to Alapag from their ASEAN Basketball League days with San Miguel Alab Pilipinas.
The Giant Pandas struggled through a 3-9 campaign in the Commissioner's Cup after opening with seven consecutive losses due to roster shortages.
This time, Macau will be reinforced by De'Vondre Perry while retaining key locals Damian Chongqui and Ramon Cao. The team also bolstered its lineup with former Bay Area Dragons and Hong Kong Eastern wing Kobey Lam.
The conference opens with Titan Ultra taking on Terrafirma at 5:15 p.m. in a matchup featuring two teams looking to rebound after finishing near the bottom of the standings last conference.
Titan Ultra will field an all-Filipino lineup after import Tirrell Brown was unable to complete his mandatory height measurement ahead of the opener. Brown is scheduled to undergo the official process on Saturday at the PBA Office.
Terrafirma, meanwhile, welcomes back veteran guard Juami Tiongson, who returned to the franchise through a June 3 trade with San Miguel that sent Jerrick Ahanmisi and Paolo Hernandez to the Beermen.
The 35-year-old guard hopes to rekindle the form that made him the Dyip's franchise cornerstone and guided the team to a rare playoff appearance in 2024.
Titan Ultra, meanwhile, enters the season amid lingering speculation following offseason trade rumors involving several players, including star guard Joshua Munzon. No deal materialized, however, and Munzon remains with the club after his contract was automatically extended through the end of the season.
With Brown unavailable, Titan Ultra will lean on its local core in an attempt to deny Terrafirma a winning start.
As of 1:30 p.m., Casino Plus Sportsbook has installed Terrafirma as a 6.5-point favorite, with the game's total set at 207.5.
