Weavers, Warriors Stay Hot with Dominant Wins Over Struggling Rivals
Defending champion Abra and title contender Gensan continued their strong form in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) 2026 Season, cruising past struggling Negros and Parañaque, respectively, on Saturday at the Quezon City District 2 Gymnasium.
The Abra Solid North Weavers never trailed en route to a commanding 122–81 victory over the Negros Hacienderos in the second game, matching the Gensan Warriors’ emphatic 126–86 win over the Parañaque Patriots in the opener of a triple-header.
Powered by a balanced scoring attack and strong contributions from their homegrown players, the Weavers stretched their lead to as much as 108–54 to extend their winning streak to seven games and improve to 9–1 in the round-robin elimination phase of the 28-team, two-division tournament.
Georell Gonzales led Abra’s charge with 23 points, highlighted by seven three-pointers, along with two rebounds, earning SportsPlus Best Player honors over Encho Serrano, who top-scored with 25 points, and Drex Delos Reyes, who added 17 points and 16 rebounds.
Raven Gonzales contributed 16 points and eight rebounds, while Jake Figueroa added 15 points, five rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Josh Asuncion chipped in 10 points and six rebounds for the Weavers.
Negros slipped to 1–8 despite strong efforts from Carl Joshua Alattica (26 points, 12 rebounds, four assists), Michael Alvarez (17 points), and Wilson Baltazar (11 points, six rebounds).
Coming off the end of a 10-game winning streak, Gensan responded in dominant fashion, with eight players scoring in double figures to overpower Parañaque, 123–80, and improve to 11–1.
Former College of St. Benilde standout Anton Eusebio anchored the Warriors with 18 points, 12 rebounds, two steals, and two blocks, highlighted by a powerful dunk in the third quarter. Fil-Indonesian Karl Gloria led the team with 19 points, while Marwin Dionisio added 17 points, nine rebounds, and six assists.
Mark Cruz contributed a double-double of 13 points and 13 assists, while CJ Gonzales added 12 points. Joshua Fontanilla, Eloie Tan, and Nelo Santos all chipped in 10-plus points as Gensan overwhelmed their opponents early.
Parañaque, still winless after 12 games, was led by Jobert Medina with 20 points, Samuel Peralta with 15 points and eight rebounds, Dom Matillano with 15 points, and Paolo Castro with 10 points.
In the nightcap, the Meycauayan–Marilao Gems held off a late Sarangani Marlins rally to escape with a 70–66 win and improve to 7–3.
Jimboy Pasturan paced the Gems with 24 points, four assists, and three rebounds, while Agem Miranda added 15 points. Meycauayan–Marilao appeared in control with a 67–42 lead late in the game before Sarangani mounted a furious comeback.
Carl Bryan Lacap led the Marlins’ charge with 24 points as they trimmed the deficit to three late in the fourth. However, Jayson Apolonio split his free throws in the closing seconds to secure the win for the Gems. Lacap also added three rebounds, while Danny Marilao contributed 17 points and eight rebounds in the loss.
With the results, Gensan and Abra continue to trail unbeaten Caloocan (11–0) and Quezon Province (8–0) in the race for playoff positioning.
The MPBL resumes action at One Arena Cainta on Monday, featuring Pasig vs Bacolod at 4 p.m., Imus vs Zamboanga at 6 p.m., and Biñan vs Marikina at 8 p.m.
