Gin Kings Seek Commanding 3-1 Finals Lead Over TNT
Barangay Ginebra aims to move one win closer to the championship when it faces TNT in Game 4 of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Season 50 Commissioner’s Cup Finals tonight at the SMART Araneta Coliseum.
Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m., with the Gin Kings looking to seize a commanding 3-1 advantage in the best-of-seven series after a convincing 116-102 triumph in Game 3 last Sunday before 18,607 fans at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Ginebra's victory was fueled by a shortened rotation from head coach Tim Cone, who relied heavily on six players. The strategy paid off as Justin Brownlee and Stephen Holt delivered standout performances.
Brownlee erupted for 41 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists, while Holt bounced back in a big way with 23 points after managing just one point combined in the first two games. Holt set the tone early, scoring 15 points in the opening quarter and making his first six field-goal attempts.
Scottie Thompson added a triple-double, RJ Abarrientos came through with timely baskets, while Japeth Aguilar and Troy Rosario provided steady contributions throughout the contest.
"It was the third game in five days, and we played five or six guys tonight in heavy minutes, but they reached deep, knowing that this could be a pivotal game in this series," Cone said following the win.
With two days of rest before Game 4, attention now shifts to how Ginebra will perform with fresher legs after Cone previously cited fatigue as a factor in their Game 2 defeat.
Still, the Kings expect a strong response from TNT, which has repeatedly shown resilience throughout the season.
Despite trailing in the series, the Tropang 5G enter Game 4 determined to bounce back after nearly erasing a 22-point deficit in Game 3. TNT cut the lead to seven in the fourth quarter before costly turnovers halted its comeback bid and allowed Ginebra to pull away.
A key storyline will be the performance of Calvin Oftana. After producing 31 points and 10 rebounds in TNT's Game 2 victory, the star forward was limited to just two points in Game 3.
"I feel bad that I wasn't able to contribute to the team," Oftana said. "But the good thing is we still have another chance and more games ahead. I can still bounce back."
As the series reaches a crucial stage, Ginebra will look to tighten its grip on the Finals, while TNT seeks to level the momentum and avoid falling into a deeper hole.
