FiberXers Snap Five-Game Skid with Dominant Victory Over Giant Risers
Converge broke free from a five-game losing streak with a commanding 103-82 win over Titan Ultra, securing their second victory of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Season 50 Commissioner’s Cup on Wednesday at the Ynares Center.
With a full roster for the second straight game, the FiberXers gradually asserted control, exploding in the second quarter with a 30-18 run to take a 57-41 lead into halftime. From there, they never looked back, maintaining their dominance in the second half to seal the win.
The victory not only ended their slump but also gave a significant boost to the young Converge team, which had struggled to close games after their season-opening win against Macau. This breakthrough keeps their hopes of reaching the quarterfinals alive.
"Non-stop prayers for that second win," said head coach Delta Pineda. "Our stats have been similar to the last few games, but little by little, the team’s chemistry is starting to build."
The FiberXers improved to 2-5 and now turn their attention to a tough upcoming schedule, including games against top contenders. They will face Magnolia on Sunday, April 19, at the same venue, followed by a match against defending champions TNT on April 22 at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.
“We need to face them, we need to prepare for every team we play. But one thing’s for sure: we’ll give our best in every remaining game and maintain our performance,” Pineda added.
Converge displayed balanced scoring across the roster, with all 12 players contributing at least one field goal. Four players finished in double figures, led by Justin Arana's efficient 19 points on 9-of-10 shooting.
Juan Gomez de Liaño marked his return with 15 points, six rebounds, and two assists, while Calvin Abueva added 14 points and five rebounds in just his second game with the team. Import Kylor Kelley anchored the paint with 10 points, 14 rebounds, and three blocks as Converge recorded 25 assists and shot 47.6% from the field in a well-rounded team effort.
Titan Ultra, coming off a win over Blackwater, was unable to build on that momentum, slipping back into the loss column. Michael Gilmore led the Giant Risers with 26 points and 16 rebounds, while Joshua Munzon added 15 points, six steals, and solid contributions from Pao Javillonar and Ato Ular, who each scored 11 points.
Titan Ultra fell to 2-4 and will next face a streaking TNT team on Saturday, April 18, at the Ynares Center II in Montalban.
