Aquino Faces Tough Start as Blackwater Takes on Tropang 5G
Pat Aquino’s first game as Blackwater's interim head coach presents a tough challenge, as the Bossing are set to face TNT in a bid to secure their first win of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Season 50 Commissioner's Cup on Tuesday at the Ynares Center in Antipolo.
All eyes are on Aquino, who steps into the role after the firing of Jeffrey Cariaso due to a poor start to the conference. This 7:30 p.m. matchup marks Aquino's debut as head coach, inheriting a Blackwater team currently at 1-4 in the standings, fresh off a narrow 98-102 loss to Titan Ultra last Wednesday.
Things aren’t made easier by the fact that Aquino’s first test will be against the defending champions, TNT, who are coming off a dominant 101-89 win over Terrafirma. The Tropang 5G are still searching for their best form this season, but they remain formidable opponents.
According to the Casino Plus sportsbook, Blackwater faces an uphill battle, with TNT favored to win by a 10-point margin. The over/under for total points in the game is set at 207.0.
While Aquino is fully aware of the challenge ahead, he’s no stranger to adversity, having helped build the Gilas Women’s team from the ground up. He’s determined to bring that same success to the pro ranks, especially with Blackwater—a team he has long been connected to throughout his career.
Meanwhile, the double-header kicks off at 5:15 p.m., where NLEX (4-1) aims to extend their winning streak to three games against the winless Macau squad. Sitting in solo third place in the standings, the Road Warriors can move up to second place with a win, potentially tying with sister team Meralco.
The sportsbook favors NLEX to win by 9.5 points, with a total over/under of 217 points. However, NLEX knows they can't afford to take Macau lightly, as the winless Black Knights are desperate for a breakthrough after their sixth consecutive loss, a 115-110 defeat to Meralco last Saturday.
Macau remains the only winless team in the conference, making their upcoming games crucial if they hope to stay in the playoff race.
