Eala-Sonmez Eliminated as Siniakova-Townsend Showcase Their Dominance
Alex Eala’s campaign in the WTA Mutua Madrid Open doubles draw came to a close on Saturday after she and partner Zeynep Sonmez were defeated by the second-seeded duo of Katerina Siniakova from the Czech Republic and Taylor Townsend from the United States, 6-1, 7-5, at Caja Mágica in Manzanares Park.
The Filipino rising star and Sonmez faced an uphill battle from the start against two of the most accomplished doubles players on the tour. Siniakova and Townsend, both former world No. 1s in doubles, asserted control early, breaking serve in the opening game and quickly establishing a 2-0 lead.
Eala and Sonmez were able to hold serve in the third game, but that was their only bright spot in a first set that was dominated by the second seeds, who closed it out comfortably in just seven games.
Eala, ranked No. 101 in doubles, and Sonmez, ranked No. 498, found their footing in the second set, showing greater resistance and briefly turning the match around with a strong comeback.
After trailing 1-3, the duo broke back twice to go up 4-3 and even earned a set point on Eala’s serve in the tenth game, which could have forced a deciding set.
However, the experience of Siniakova and Townsend proved to be the difference in the final stretch. The top seeds saved the set point, broke back to level the score at 5-5, and then closed out the match by winning the last two games, finishing the contest in one hour and 10 minutes.
This victory further strengthens the momentum of Siniakova and Townsend, who entered Madrid fresh off a successful run in the “Sunshine Double,” winning titles at both Indian Wells and the Miami Open.
With her doubles campaign in Madrid now behind her, Eala will turn her attention to the Catalonia Open Solgironès in Girona, where she is set to compete from April 27 to May 3. She enters the WTA 125 event as the sixth seed, with top-seeded Leylah Fernandez of Canada and second-seeded Wang Xinyu of China among the familiar faces she’s faced in previous tournaments this season.
