Eala Overpowered by Mertens in Madrid Open Second Round
Alex Eala came out aggressive and eager to compete, but Elise Mertens proved too consistent and precise, delivering a dominant 6-2, 6-1 victory in the second round of the Mutua Madrid Open on Friday at Park Manzanares in Spain.
Eala showed early promise, jumping to a 40-love lead in the opening game, but Mertens quickly erased the deficit and seized control. The 20-year-old Filipina briefly regained her footing, holding serve in the third game and staying within striking distance at 3-2, but that was as close as she would get in the first set.
Mertens then took over, dictating play with a mix of powerful strokes and well-placed drop shots that kept Eala off balance. The Belgian wrapped up the first set in just 32 minutes, 6-2.
The second set, though still a straight-sets defeat, showed more resistance from Eala. The first four games were all extended to deuce, but Mertens capitalized in crucial moments to build a 4-0 lead. Eala finally got on the scoreboard in the fifth game, but Mertens' precise shot-making and composure ultimately sealed the win.
Mertens, a former world No. 12 in singles and the current world No. 1 in doubles, continued to demonstrate her all-around game. Earlier this year, she won the Australian Open women’s doubles title with Zhang Shuai, marking her sixth Grand Slam doubles crown.
Eala now turns her focus to doubles, where she partners with Zeynep Sonmez. The duo will face second seeds Taylor Townsend and Katerina Siniakova in the second round on Sunday.
