Cignal Super Spikers Take Leave of Absence from PVL After Historic Season
Just days after a breakthrough season, Cignal has made the unexpected decision to step away from the Premier Volleyball League (PVL)
The Cignal Super Spikers have officially filed for a leave of absence from the league, putting a surprising halt to a program that had just reached new heights. The team had advanced to the All-Filipino Conference Finals for the first time in franchise history, marking a significant achievement.
This move is part of a broader organizational shift within the franchise, which also previously placed its Spikers' Turf men’s team on leave ahead of the PVL Open Conference.
In an official statement, the team said, “This is to officially announce that the Cignal Super Spikers - Women's Volleyball Team has filed a Leave of Absence in the Premier Volleyball League.” They added, “This difficult decision was taken after careful review of Cignal’s strategic direction.”
No timeline has been provided for a potential return, leaving the team’s future in the league uncertain.
Cignal’s recent campaign was a strong resurgence following a period of inconsistency over the past two years. Led by Conference MVP Vanie Gandler, the Super Spikers emerged as title contenders with a roster that also featured Erika Santos, Gel Cayuna, Dawn Catindig, Rose Doria-Aquino, Jackie Acuña, and Tine Tiamzon. Despite their inspired run, Cignal fell short in the Finals, losing to the veteran Creamline Cool Smashers in straight sets.
Nevertheless, the Super Spikers' deep playoff run further solidified their place as a formidable team in the league. Since joining the PVL in 2021, Cignal has consistently been a podium contender, securing three silver medals and five bronze finishes across 15 conferences.
This latest development adds to a season of upheaval in the PVL, following the disbandment of the Chery Tiggo Crossovers in December and the earlier leave of absence taken by the Petro Gazz Angels in January. By the end of the 2025–26 season, the league will have been reduced to just nine active teams.
