Eala stuns Osaka, becomes first Filipina to reach WTA 500 final

Alex Eala made history once again after defeating former world No. 1 Naomi Osaka, 6-4, 6-2, to become the first Filipina to reach a WTA 500 final at the Mubadala Citi DC Open on Sunday morning (Manila time) in Washington, D.C.

The world No. 28 entered the semifinal as the tournament’s only unseeded player but delivered another composed performance against third seed Osaka, extending the best run of her young career.

Osaka, currently ranked No. 13 in the world, entered the match with strong momentum after reaching the final of the WTA 500 Bad Homburg Open and the quarterfinals of Wimbledon, where she defeated world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka before losing to Karolina Muchova.

Eala, however, relied on her consistency, movement, and ability to extend rallies to neutralize Osaka’s powerful game.

After both players held serve early, Eala secured the first break in the third game to take a 2-1 lead. Osaka responded immediately, but the Filipina regained control by forcing longer exchanges and capitalizing on unforced errors.

The key moment came in the ninth game when Eala broke Osaka again to move ahead 5-4 before serving out the set, 6-4.

Eala carried the momentum into the second set, breaking Osaka in the opening game and building a 3-1 advantage.

Osaka fought back in the fifth game, saving four break points to stay within striking distance, but Eala remained composed and closed out the match by winning the final three games for a straight-set victory.

The win secured Eala’s first WTA 500 final appearance and the biggest championship opportunity of her professional career.

She will face top seed and world No. 3 Jessica Pegula of the United States in the final early Monday morning (Manila time), with the biggest title of her career at stake.
