Eala faces Zheng in DC opener amid fitness questions

Alex Eala opens her North American hard-court campaign on Tuesday with a challenging first-round matchup against China's Zheng Qinwen in the WTA 500 Mubadala Citi DC Open in Washington, D.C.

The tournament serves as the start of Eala's buildup to the US Open following a two-week break that included a short visit to the Philippines. Questions about the Filipina's fitness, however, have surfaced after she withdrew from the doubles event, where she was originally scheduled to partner American tennis legend Venus Williams.

The withdrawal has raised concerns over Eala's condition, making her opening-round clash against Zheng an important test of her readiness for the hard-court stretch.

Currently ranked No. 28 in the world, Eala renews a rivalry with Zheng that began at the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games. The Filipina pushed the Chinese star to three sets in the semifinals before falling, 6-1, 6-7, 6-3. Zheng went on to win the gold medal, while Eala claimed bronze.

Although currently ranked No. 123, Zheng remains one of the tour's most dangerous players when healthy. The 23-year-old underwent elbow surgery after battling a lingering injury that sidelined her for much of the past year, causing her ranking to drop before beginning her climb back up.

Despite her current ranking, Zheng boasts an impressive résumé, highlighted by the women's singles gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics, a runner-up finish at the 2024 Australian Open, and a quarterfinal appearance at the US Open.

Known for her powerful serve and aggressive baseline game, Zheng thrives on controlling rallies with heavy topspin and penetrating groundstrokes. Eala will need to take the ball early and keep her returns deep to disrupt the Chinese standout's rhythm.

The winner will advance to the round of 16 to face either Canada's Leylah Fernandez or Poland's Magda Linette.
