Eala faces Svitolina rematch in DC quarterfinals

Alex Eala will face another major challenge at the WTA 500 Mubadala Citi DC Open when she takes on second seed Elina Svitolina of Ukraine in the quarterfinals on Saturday at 6:30 a.m. (Philippine time).

The Filipina enters the match riding a breakthrough run in Washington after opening the tournament with back-to-back victories over higher-ranked opponents. Eala first defeated former world No. 4 Zheng Qinwen before overcoming defending champion Leylah Fernandez to reach the last eight.

This time, however, Eala finds herself facing a familiar opponent.

The world No. 28 defeated Svitolina, 6-3, 6-4, in the quarterfinals of the WTA 500 Berlin Tennis Open in June, handing the Ukrainian one of her biggest losses of the 2026 season.

That result ended a strong stretch for Svitolina, who had been among the WTA Tour's top performers before the setback. She later dealt with a right hip injury that forced her to retire from her Bad Homburg quarterfinal match and suffered a first-round Wimbledon exit against fellow Ukrainian Daria Snigur.

Svitolina has since returned to form in Washington, defeating qualifier Polina Kudermetova, 7-6(4), 6-4, to advance to the quarterfinals.

The 31-year-old has enjoyed an impressive comeback season, winning the ASB Classic in Auckland and capturing the WTA 1000 Italian Open title after defeating top players including Elena Rybakina, Iga Swiatek, and Coco Gauff. She also reached the semifinals of the Australian Open, Indian Wells, and Stuttgart, while finishing runner-up in Dubai.

Svitolina's game is built around consistency, movement, and defensive discipline. She relies on deep groundstrokes and court coverage rather than overpowering opponents.

Eala, meanwhile, has thrived on hard courts with her aggressive left-handed game. The Rafa Nadal Academy graduate has displayed strong shot-making and composure throughout her Washington campaign, while keeping her unforced errors under control.

A key factor in the matchup could be Svitolina's second serve, which Eala has effectively attacked in her wins over Zheng and Fernandez.

If Eala can dictate rallies early and push Svitolina around the court, she will have another opportunity to secure a major victory.

The winner will advance to the semifinals and face either third seed Naomi Osaka of Japan or Italy's Elisabetta Cocciaretto.
