Eala Cruises Past Hon to Reach Next Round at Birmingham Open
Alex Eala launched her grass-court campaign with authority, defeating Australia’s Priscilla Hon 6-0, 6-2 to advance in the Lexus Birmingham Open WTA 125 event at England’s Edgbaston Priory Club on Tuesday.
The 21-year-old top seed from the Philippines dominated from start to finish, delivering a clinical performance in just 59 minutes, demonstrating her strong form despite a minor doubles setback the day before.
Eala, currently ranked world No. 37, had recently faced a tough doubles loss with Czech partner Nikola Bartůňková, squandering a match point against Great Britain’s Harriet Dart and Maia Lumsden in a 6-4, 2-6, 11-9 defeat. She quickly refocused on singles, however, making a commanding statement in her opener.
From the outset, Eala set the tempo, going through the first set in just 22 minutes without dropping a game. Her precise, aggressive shot-making left former world No. 94 Hon struggling to respond.
The second set mirrored the first, with Eala racing to a 5-0 lead and maintaining control from the baseline. Hon managed to claim two games in succession, but Eala sealed the match in the eighth game, doubling her opponent’s total points, 53 to 27, underscoring her dominance.
This victory also improved Eala’s head-to-head record against Hon to 2-1, having previously met twice on the ITF and WTA 125 circuits, with each player holding one straight-sets win.
Eala now awaits her next opponent, who will be decided between Belgium’s Greet Minnen and Russia’s Alina Charaeva, as she aims to make a deep run in Birmingham.
