Alex Eala aims to regain her clay-court rhythm as she kicks off her 2026 Italian Open campaign against seasoned Polish player Magdalena Fręch.

The world No. 42 Eala will meet world No. 45 Fręch in a challenging first-round clash on Tuesday (Manila time) at Rome’s Foro Italico during the Internazionali BNL d’Italia.

Fręch, 28, is currently Poland’s second-highest ranked player behind world No. 3 Iga Świątek. She enjoyed a breakout 2024 season, reaching a career-high ranking of No. 24, advancing to the fourth round of the Australian Open, and capturing her first WTA title at the Guadalajara Open, a WTA 500 event.

Known for her steady baseline game with an aggressive edge, Fręch can dictate rallies with deep, powerful groundstrokes and demonstrates keen tactical awareness. Her style suits clay, where she can extend rallies or finish points with precise shot-making.

For Eala, maintaining serving consistency will be crucial, especially to avoid being exposed on second serves against a player who quickly attacks any short or weak deliveries.

The 20-year-old Filipina also has extra motivation, with the potential for a second-round rematch against world No. 33 Wang Xinyu of China. Wang narrowly defeated Eala in a three-set ASB Classic semifinal earlier this year, denying her a shot at the title.

Looking further ahead, a high-profile third-round showdown with world No. 2 Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan could be on the cards if both players advance.

Eala enters Rome seeking to stabilize her clay-court form after a mixed recent run, going 2–3 in her latest tournaments following a strong early-season stretch that saw her briefly climb to a career-high No. 29.
