Alas Pilipinas Boys make history with best-ever AVC U18 finish after placing 10th

Alas Pilipinas Boys capped their 2026 Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Boys' U18 Volleyball Championship campaign with a historic 10th-place finish despite falling to Indonesia, 23-25, 25-18, 25-15, 25-14, in the ninth-place classification match on Saturday night at the Wuyuan River Gymnasium in Haikou, China.

Although the Filipinos missed the chance to claim ninth place, their 10th-place result marked the best performance by the Philippines in tournament history, surpassing the previous high of 11th place achieved in the 2024 edition in Bahrain.

Team captain Howard Guerra highlighted the significance of the achievement, saying the result reflects the continued growth of the country's youth volleyball program.

"I’m still proud of what we showed tonight. We improved from our previous 11th-place finish in Bahrain," Guerra said. "We were aiming for No. 9, but this 10th-place finish is still proof that our national team is improving."

The Philippines finished third in Pool B with a 1-2 record, earning a win over Bahrain while suffering defeats to India and eventual champion Iran.

Alas Pilipinas came close to reaching the quarterfinals after pushing India to the limit in a five-set battle during the group stage before losing, 25-16, 25-20, 20-25, 23-25, 4-15.

Head coach Oliver Balse praised his players for making the most of their limited preparation time and expressed confidence in the team's future.

"We only had a month and a half to prepare, and I’m very proud of what we showed throughout the tournament," Balse said. "We almost had it against India. Our program is still new, but I have great faith that this team will continue to improve."

After failing to advance to the knockout rounds, the young Filipinos responded strongly in the classification phase, scoring back-to-back victories over Australia and Hong Kong-China before closing their campaign against Indonesia.

Al-Raquib Dais and Terrence Marticion led the Philippines with 12 points each in the final match, while Indonesia's Muhamad Rizqi Maulana delivered a match-high 26 points.

In the medal matches, Chinese Taipei secured the bronze medal after rallying past host China, 20-25, 25-23, 14-25, 25-21, 25-13.
