Reigning champion Batangas–New Zealand Bluefire begins its title defense on Sunday, facing debuting Caloocan in the opening triple-header of the 2026 Women’s Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (W MPBL) at the Alonte Sports Arena.

The Valkyries headline the 6 p.m. nightcap, eager to set the tone for their retention campaign despite the absence of reigning MVP Afril Bernardino, who is currently representing the Philippines in the 2026 FIBA 3x3 World Cup Qualifiers in Singapore. Nonetheless, Batangas remains a formidable force, with Snow Peñaranda, Khate Castillo, and Pringle Fabruada expected to lead the charge against the Lady Kankaloo.

Caloocan enters the league with a seasoned roster intent on upsetting the champions’ opener. With Janine Pontejos, Kris Tolentino, and Rejoice Adlawan leading the charge, the expansion team faces a tough first challenge but is determined to prove it can compete with the league's best.

Earlier in the day, the 4 p.m. matchup between Akari and Queenpin Basketball promises to be another exciting contest, with both teams boasting deep and talented lineups.
