TNT begins title defense, Ginebra faces new test as Governors’ Cup campaign opens

A month after their memorable championship showdown, TNT and Barangay Ginebra begin a new chapter as the two Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) powerhouses launch their respective campaigns in the Season 50 Governors’ Cup on Sunday at the SMART Araneta Coliseum.

The Tropang 5G open the doubleheader against winless guest team Macau at 5:15 p.m. in a Group A matchup, while the Gin Kings make their debut at 7:30 p.m. against Group B co-leader Phoenix Super LPG.

Much of the spotlight will be on Ginebra, which returns to action after capturing the Season 50 Commissioner's Cup title by defeating TNT in a thrilling best-of-seven finals series that went the distance.

However, the defending champions will begin the conference without their longtime star import Justin Brownlee, who continues to recover from multiple leg injuries sustained during the previous conference and aggravated during Gilas Pilipinas’ recent FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifiers campaign.

Taking Brownlee’s place is newcomer Riley Grigsby, who is coming off his first season in the NBA G League with the Santa Cruz Warriors and Sioux Falls Skyforce.

While Ginebra works on building chemistry with the 26-year-old reinforcement, the team hopes to collect early wins, starting with a difficult matchup against Phoenix, which currently shares the Group B lead with Blackwater at 2-0.

The Fuel Masters are coming off back-to-back victories, opening their campaign with a win over Magnolia before surviving Meralco, 98-97, last Wednesday. Phoenix now looks to continue its strong start against the reigning champions.

According to TigerScore, Ginebra enters the matchup as a -7.5 favorite, with the over/under set at 210.5.

Meanwhile, TNT aims to begin its Governors’ Cup title defense on a positive note as it returns to action following its narrow championship loss in the previous conference.

The Tropang 5G will be reinforced by Darius Days as they look to regain their championship form against Macau, which has struggled to find its footing in its second PBA stint.

The Giant Pandas remain winless at 0-3 in Group A, with their latest setback coming in a 149-124 loss to Converge behind Justin Arana’s dominant performance on Friday at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.
