Reyes, Alapag set for first coaching showdown as TNT faces NLEX

Chot Reyes and Jimmy Alapag will square off as opposing head coaches for the first time on Tuesday night when TNT battles NLEX in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Season 50 Governors' Cup.

Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m., with the marquee matchup featuring two of the MVP Group's most accomplished basketball figures. Alapag, who guided TNT to six PBA championships as a player, now leads the Road Warriors against the franchise where he established himself as one of the league's all-time greats.

For Reyes, the game carries special significance after years of working alongside Alapag with both TNT and Gilas Pilipinas.

"It will be an honor coaching against a legitimate NBA coach," said the league's seven-time Coach of the Year. "It will be an honor."

NLEX enters the contest as the league's lone unbeaten team, sporting a perfect 5-0 record atop Group A after a 119-107 victory over Converge last Saturday.

TNT, meanwhile, improved to 3-2 following consecutive wins over Converge and San Miguel Beer, including a gritty 93-90 overtime triumph against the Beermen.

Despite the return of import Rahlir Hollis-Jefferson, Reyes acknowledged his team still faces a difficult task with Roger Pogoy sidelined by a Grade 1 MCL sprain.

"Not only are they unbeaten, but they are playing at a very high level," Reyes said. "Higher than any other team in the league, to be very honest with you. A great job Coach Jimmy is doing there. I'm so proud of the job that he's doing."

"It's going to be a huge challenge for us. I hope we can be deserving of going on the same floor with them, to compete against them, especially with all our injuries. This is going to be a really, really big mountain for us."

According to Tiger Score Sportsbook, NLEX enters the game as a +5.0 underdog against TNT, while the over/under is set at 206.5.

In the 5:15 p.m. curtain-raiser, Titan Ultra takes on guest team Macau in a rematch of their high-scoring encounter last July 25.

The Macau Giant Pandas claimed a 132-126 victory in that meeting behind Ramon Cao, who finished with 28 points and 13 rebounds, including 11 of his team's final 13 points.

Macau has since improved to 2-4 after rallying past Terrafirma, 96-92, last Wednesday behind the late-game efforts of De'Vondre Perry, Kobey Lam, and Damian Chongqui.

Titan Ultra, meanwhile, hopes to snap a two-game losing streak after upsetting TNT on July 22. The Giant Risers currently sit at the bottom of Group A with a 1-5 record.
