Tamaraws overpower Kuyas, climb into South Division Top 7
The Mindoro Tamaraws boosted their playoff hopes in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) 2026 Season after defeating the Bulacan Kuyas, 97-79, on Monday at the Mandaluyong City College of Science and Technology Gym.
Powered by an efficient offensive performance and a commanding effort on the boards, Mindoro improved to 10-9 in the elimination round and moved up to seventh place in the South Division, overtaking Basilan Steel (10-11).
John Apacible anchored the Tamaraws with a double-double of 14 points and 14 rebounds, along with two assists, to earn Best Player of the Game honors.
"I'm pushing myself so that I can help my team," said Apacible. "My teammates and coaches have been very supportive."
Bambam Gamalinda added 13 points, five rebounds, and two assists, while JC Recto contributed 11 points, four assists, and two rebounds. RJ Ramirez and Joshua Flores scored nine points apiece, and Jayvee Dela Cruz chipped in eight.
Mindoro shot an efficient 50 percent from the field, converting 37 of its 74 attempts, while dominating the rebounding battle, 46-36.
Bulacan dropped to 5-15 despite a game-high 29 points from Jefremy Cruz, who also collected five rebounds and three assists. Kenneth Castillo added 11 points and three rebounds.
The tournament continues on Tuesday at the Ynares Center Montalban, with San Juan facing Negros at 3 p.m., Zamboanga taking on Batangas at 5 p.m., and Sarangani battling Rizal at 7 p.m.
