Retamar becomes first Filipino to compete in European Cup with Azerbaijan club

Joshua Retamar is set to make Philippine volleyball history after signing with Ordu Sports Club of Azerbaijan for the 2026–27 season, becoming the first Filipino import to compete in the European Cup.

The Filipino setter is scheduled to leave for Azerbaijan on Aug. 11 to begin preparations with his new club, giving him time to adjust to the team's system before the start of the season.

Retamar's early arrival is expected to play a crucial role in his transition, particularly as a setter tasked with directing the offense. The position requires extensive work in developing timing and chemistry with hitters while mastering the team's offensive schemes and communication on the court.

His signing marks another milestone for Philippine volleyball, with Asian setters rarely earning opportunities in Europe's professional leagues.

"This is a dream come true and a challenge that I'm truly excited to embrace," Retamar said.

"Playing in Europe has always been one of my aspirations because it allows me to compete against some of the best players in the world and continue growing as an athlete. While I may be wearing the colors of Ordu Sports Club, I know that I will still be carrying the Philippines with me on another playing field. Every match is an opportunity to show the world what Filipino volleyball players are capable of, and I hope this journey inspires more young athletes to dream bigger and believe that opportunities beyond Asia are possible."

Retamar's management said negotiations with Ordu Sports Club had been ongoing for several months, with the Azerbaijani club identifying the former National University standout as a key piece to run its offense.

They added that arriving before the start of the season will allow Retamar to fully adapt to the team's system and establish the chemistry expected of its primary playmaker.

"For a setter, joining the team ahead of the season is extremely important. Building chemistry with teammates cannot be rushed, and Joshua's early arrival will allow him to fully integrate into the team's system before official competitions begin. We are grateful to Ordu Sports Club for believing in his talent and look forward to seeing him represent both the club and the Philippines on one of volleyball's biggest stages," his management said.

Retamar also expressed his gratitude to the coaches, teammates, supporters, and everyone who helped shape his career, adding that he hopes his breakthrough opens more doors for future Filipino volleyball players abroad.
