Playoff atmosphere takes center stage in PBA doubleheader

A pair of marquee matchups featuring perennial title contenders highlights Sunday's Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Season 50 Governors' Cup schedule at the SMART Araneta Coliseum, with both games carrying an early playoff feel.

Unbeaten teams NLEX and San Miguel clash for the solo lead in Group A at 5:15 p.m., before Barangay Ginebra renews its rivalry with Rain or Shine at 7:30 p.m. in a rematch of last conference's semifinal series.

According to Tiger Score sportsbook, NLEX enters the opener as the underdog with a +5.5 handicap, while the total points line is set at 222.5.

In the nightcap, Ginebra is favored by 5.0 points over Rain or Shine, with the over/under pegged at 213.5.

NLEX heads into the showdown as the more rested squad after enjoying a 12-day break following its 135-100 victory over Titan Ultra. Head coach Jimmy Alapag said the extended layoff gave the Road Warriors valuable time to improve under his system.

San Miguel, meanwhile, is coming off a 128-122 victory over Converge last Wednesday, with assistant coach Peter Martin continuing to steer the team while head coach Leo Austria deals with health issues.

Adding intrigue to the opener is Alapag's reunion with the franchise where he previously served as an assistant coach. The former PBA MVP joined Austria's coaching staff in 2019 and helped San Miguel capture two championships.

"I think it will be a great test for us," Alapag said. "A team that has really stamped their legacy in this league with their dominance behind June Mar. Great challenge for our guys, especially this early in the conference."

The second game marks the first meeting between Ginebra and Rain or Shine since the Kings eliminated the Elasto Painters in six games during last conference's semifinals before going on to capture the Commissioner's Cup title against TNT.

That playoff series also featured heated moments involving Rain or Shine head coach Yeng Guiao and Ginebra governor and PBA vice chairman Alfrancis Chua.

Ginebra is still without stars Justin Brownlee and Scottie Thompson, whose injuries have kept them sidelined this conference. The Kings rebounded from an opening-game loss to Phoenix with a convincing 115-85 rout of Blackwater behind Stephen Holt and Riley Grigsby.

Rain or Shine, meanwhile, regained momentum after snapping Phoenix's unbeaten start with a 105-98 victory last Tuesday in its first meeting against former captain Gian Mamuyac since his offseason trade.
