Nocum delivers career-high performance as Elasto Painters edge Hotshots

Rain or Shine survived a late Magnolia comeback as Adrian Nocum hit the game-winning basket with 5.6 seconds remaining to secure a thrilling 98-97 victory in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Season 50 Governors' Cup on Friday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Nocum attacked Raffy Verano and converted a layup to put the Elasto Painters back ahead after Ian Sangalang's three-point play briefly gave the Hotshots a 97-96 lead.

Magnolia had one final opportunity, but Jhonard Clarito and import Aaron Fuller combined to force KJ Buffen into a difficult shot at the buzzer, allowing Rain or Shine to escape with its third straight victory.

The win improved the Elasto Painters' record after opening the conference with two consecutive losses.

Nocum delivered the biggest performance of his career, finishing with a career-high 31 points along with nine rebounds, four assists, and two steals.

"Nagtitiwala naman kami sa diskarte niya," Rain or Shine head coach Yeng Guiao said of Nocum. "Sabi ko nga, nag-iimprove na 'yung decision-making niya."

Deo Cuajao added 15 points, while Luis Villegas contributed 12 points, including several timely three-pointers that helped Rain or Shine stay within range throughout the game.

Fuller struggled offensively, shooting 5-of-19 from the field for 14 points, but contributed 12 rebounds and made key defensive plays in the closing minutes.

Rain or Shine also overcame a difficult shooting night from Caelan Tiongson, who scored only six points after missing nine of his 10 attempts from beyond the arc.

"Hirap kaming pasahan ng bola sa ilalim si Aaron tapos ang daming turnovers, na-aanticipate na nila ... at the same time 'yung three-point shooting namin, medyo mababa ang percentage," Guiao said. "Pero tyinaga namin."

Rain or Shine will look to extend its winning streak against Meralco on Sunday at the SMART Araneta Coliseum.

Magnolia dropped to 1-3 in Group B despite a strong outing from Buffen, who led the Hotshots with 31 points and 17 rebounds.

Zavier Lucero added 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Sangalang finished with 14 points. Paul Lee and Mark Barroca chipped in 13 and 11 points, respectively.
