Mike Phillips signs with Kyoto Hannaryz for 2026-27 B.League season

Mike Phillips is taking the next step in his basketball career after signing with the Kyoto Hannaryz for the 2026-27 B.League season.

The Japanese club announced the acquisition of the Filipino-American forward on Tuesday, making him the latest Filipino player to join its roster through the league's Asian Quota program.

"I’m truly honored and grateful for the opportunity to join the Kyoto Hannaryz organization and the B.LEAGUE," Phillips said in a statement.

The 24-year-old became eligible as an Asian Quota player after suiting up for Gilas Pilipinas during Window 3 of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifiers. Earlier this year, FIBA recognized him as a local player for the Philippines, clearing the way for his national team debut.

Phillips quickly made his presence felt with Gilas, averaging 4.0 points and 8.5 rebounds in two appearances while providing energy and rebounding in the frontcourt.

Before turning professional, he starred at De La Salle University, helping the Green Archers win two UAAP men's basketball championships during his five-year collegiate career. In his final season, he averaged 12.58 points, 14.58 rebounds, 2.68 assists, and 1.32 steals per game and earned Finals MVP honors.

Phillips is no stranger to Japanese basketball, having competed in the World University Basketball Series with La Salle.

"During my college years, I had the chance to play in several tournaments in Japan, and those experiences left a strong impression on me. I’m excited to return and experience the passion of basketball in Japan once again," he said.

He began his professional career with the San Juan Knights in the MPBL, averaging 8.4 points and 10.7 rebounds in 10 games before securing the move overseas.

Phillips' older brother, Ben, thanked De La Salle University, the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas, and the San Juan Knights for helping shape Mike's career.

"The Phillips Family is immensely grateful to everyone from La Salle who has poured knowledge and support into Mike over the years, SBP for allowing the great honor to represent the flag and country, and San Juan Knights for their utmost professionalism and support with this decision," Ben said.

He added that the move would help Mike continue his development while preparing him for future stints with Gilas Pilipinas and, eventually, the PBA.

"I’m looking forward to giving my all every day alongside my teammates and competing hard for the Kyoto fans and community throughout the season," Phillips said. "Thank you very much for your support. I can’t wait to see everyone in Kyoto, and I hope we can have a great season together."

Phillips becomes the third Asian Quota player in Kyoto Hannaryz history, joining fellow Filipinos Matthew Wright and Jamie Malonzo. The Hannaryz are coming off a 28-32 campaign that saw them finish 20th in the 26-team B.League standings.
