Eusebio, Fontanilla Lead Warriors to 10th Straight Victory Over Greats
The Gensan Warriors held off repeated challenges from the Cebu Greats to secure a 91-80 win on Friday, tying for the top spot in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) 2026 Season at Paco Arena in Manila.
Anton Eusebio spearheaded Gensan’s effort with 15 points, 11 rebounds, and 3 assists, combining forces with Joshua Fontanilla, Kris Porter, and Hesed Gabo to fuel the Warriors’ 10th consecutive triumph. The victory puts Gensan level with the Caloocan Batang Kankaloo in the round-robin elimination stage of the 28-team, two-division tournament.
Fontanilla contributed 17 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 steals, while Marwin Dionisio added 15 points, 10 rebounds, and 2 assists. Mark Cruz finished with 12 points and 5 assists; Porter scored 13 points; Adi Santos posted 5 points and 14 rebounds; and Gabo recorded 8 points with 11 assists.
Cebu fell to 7-3 despite standout performances from Mark Meneses, who scored 17 points with 6 rebounds; Brian Heruela, who tallied 12 points, 7 assists, 5 rebounds, and 4 steals; and Paul Desiderio, who added 10 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 assists.
The Greats once led 56-44, but the Warriors mounted a second-half comeback, fueled by a balanced offense and timely contributions from key rotation players.
In an earlier matchup, the Valenzuela City Darkhorse relied on JR Olegario, Jay Collado, and Angelo Obuyes to edge the Paranaque Patriots 76-72, evening their record at 5-5.
Olegario led the way with 20 points, 8 rebounds, 4 steals, and 2 assists, while Collado added 17 points, 9 rebounds, and 5 assists. Obuyes chipped in 16 points and 3 rebounds as Paranaque suffered its 11th straight loss.
The MPBL resumes Saturday at the Orion Sports Complex with Pasay facing Quezon City at 4 p.m., San Juan taking on Basilan at 6 p.m., and Bataan clashing with Rizal at 8 p.m.
