Eala outlasts Linette, advances to Miami Open fourth round

Alex Eala advanced to the fourth round of the Miami Open after a straight-sets victory over Poland’s Magda Linette, 6-3, 7-6(2), on Sunday morning (Philippine time) at the Grandstand of Hard Rock Stadium.

In the earlier round, Eala outlasted Germany’s Laura Siegemund, while Linette entered the match with momentum after upsetting compatriot and world No. 1 Iga Świątek.

Eala and Linette traded steady service holds early in the opening set, with neither player able to create significant separation. The breakthrough came in the eighth game, where the 20-year-old Filipina secured the lone service break needed to take control. She held serve in the next game to claim the set in 40 minutes.

Carrying that rhythm into the second set, Eala struck first with an early break. Linette, however, responded after a brief medical timeout due to back discomfort, rallying to level the match and eventually move ahead, 4-3.

Facing a deficit, Eala stayed composed and forced a tiebreak, where she quickly took charge. She surged to a 3-0 lead and never looked back, closing out the tiebreak, 7-2, to complete the victory in one hour and 48 minutes.

The result follows Eala’s earlier win over Linette in the quarterfinals of the ASB Classic this year, signaling a shift in their head-to-head after the Filipina dropped their first two meetings.

Eala credited her recent run of high-level matches for her continued growth on tour.

“I think I matured a lot in the past year. I’ve been put in a lot of high-pressure moments, a lot of big stages, which I’m so grateful for and wouldn’t trade for the world,” she said. “But being back in the fourth round makes me feel the same as I did last year.”
