Women’s Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (WMPBL) Batangas–New Zealand Bluefire moved one win away from securing an outright semifinal berth after routing Pasig Queenpin, 80-52, on Wednesday at Hoops Haven in Pasay City.

The Valkyries came out firing, jumping to an 18-1 start behind Snow Peñaranda, Khate Castillo, and Afril Bernardino. They maintained control throughout the game and built a commanding 25-point halftime lead, 46-21, improving their record to 7-2 and moving into solo second place.

It was a strong bounce-back performance for Batangas–New Zealand following their 58-74 loss to Akari-Rizal last Sunday.

“Of course, we want to see what kind of character we have coming off a loss. It’s a good sign for us that we can bounce back and correct our mistakes,” said head coach Cholo Villanueva.

The Valkyries also limited Pasig star Gabi Bade, who struggled mightily and shot just 5-of-20 from the field despite finishing with 15 points, five rebounds, and five assists.

Pringle Fabruada made an impressive season debut off the bench, scoring 15 points on 6-of-7 shooting. Queenie Aquino and Khate Castillo added 12 points each, while Snow Peñaranda contributed 11 points, six rebounds, and five assists.

Batangas–New Zealand will look to clinch an automatic semifinal spot when they face last-place Caloocan on Sunday.

Pasig, which dropped to 2-7 and fell to fifth place, was led by Lee Sario’s 16 points. The Queenpin will close out its elimination round campaign against the Sparks on Sunday as well.
