Alas Men relegated to fifth-place playoff after loss to Indonesia
Alas Pilipinas' hopes of reaching the medal round in the second leg of the 2026 SEA V Cup ended after a 25-18, 25-17, 23-25, 25-19 loss to host Indonesia in Pool A on Friday at the Jakarta International Velodrome.
The defeat left the Filipinos winless in pool play and sent them to the fifth-place playoff, where they will face Myanmar on Saturday in a rematch of last week's classification game after also finishing fifth in the tournament's opening leg in Candon City, Ilocos Sur.
Despite dropping the opening two sets, Alas Pilipinas showed signs of life in the third behind the strong play of opposite hitter Lirick Mendoza.
The Filipinos erased a late deficit after Al-Bulkharie Sali ignited the comeback with a back-row attack before Joshua Magalaman sealed the set with a block on Boy Arabi to give Alas a 25-23 victory and extend the match.
Indonesia quickly regained control in the fourth set.
Reserves Luvi Nugraha and Sigit Ardian sparked a decisive run as the hosts pulled away to complete the four-set victory.
Mendoza led Alas Pilipinas with 14 points built on 13 attacks and one block, while Jude Garcia added 11 points. Sali contributed eight points in his best performance of the tournament, and Magalaman finished with seven.
Nugraha paced all scorers with 15 points for Indonesia, while middle blocker Ahmad Gumilar chipped in 13 points on eight attacks, four blocks, and one ace.
The loss came a day after Alas Pilipinas suffered a straight-set defeat to first-leg champion Cambodia, leaving the Filipinos without a victory in Pool A.
Indonesia completed a sweep of the group to advance to the crossover semifinals against Vietnam, while Thailand and Cambodia will face off in the other semifinal.
