Rain or Shine, Magnolia launch Governors' Cup bids against Blackwater, Phoenix
Rain or Shine and Magnolia begin their respective bids for a strong start in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Season 50 Governors' Cup when they face Blackwater and Phoenix, respectively, on Saturday at Ynares Center II in Montalban, Rizal.
The Elasto Painters take on the Bossing in the 5:15 p.m. curtain-raiser, while the Hotshots battle the Fuel Masters in the 7:30 p.m. main game.
According to TigerScore Sportsbook, Rain or Shine enters the opener as an 11.5-point favorite over Blackwater, with the over/under set at 221.5 points.
Rain or Shine looks to build on the momentum of its Commissioner's Cup campaign, where it reached the semifinals before falling to eventual finalist Barangay Ginebra in six games.
Seeking to make a deeper run in the season-ending conference, the Elasto Painters reunited with veteran import Aaron Fuller, who returns for his sixth PBA stint. Fuller, a longtime favorite of head coach Yeng Guiao dating back to their NLEX partnership in 2017, joins a more mature Rain or Shine squad led by rising stars Gian Mamuyac and Adrian Nocum.
Blackwater, meanwhile, opens a new era under head coach Pat Aquino following an offseason roster overhaul.
Kib Montalbo and James Sena are expected to take on expanded roles after the departure of several veterans, including Paul Zamar. Sedrick Barefield and Christian David remain the pillars of the Bossing as the franchise begins its first season under Aquino after three years with Jeff Cariaso at the helm.
The second game features Magnolia and Phoenix, two teams looking to bounce back after falling in the Commissioner's Cup quarterfinals.
The Hotshots pushed Meralco to a do-or-die game after overcoming the Bolts' twice-to-beat advantage, only to suffer a heartbreaking 105-102 overtime defeat. Phoenix, on the other hand, saw its playoff run end against eventual champion Barangay Ginebra.
TigerScore Sportsbook lists Magnolia as a 4.5-point favorite over the Fuel Masters, with the total set at 203.0 points.
Magnolia hopes to carry over the form that fueled its late-season resurgence, highlighted by three consecutive elimination-round victories and a quarterfinal upset of Meralco before ultimately bowing out in overtime. Jerom Lastimosa starred in that deciding contest with one of the best performances of his young PBA career.
Phoenix enters the conference with a reshaped backcourt after dealing Evan Nelle to NLEX in one of Jimmy Alapag's first roster moves as Road Warriors head coach.
The Fuel Masters will lean on new import BJ Johnson, a former NBA player with stints for the Sacramento Kings and Orlando Magic, while Magnolia counters with debuting reinforcement KJ Buffen, an NCAA Division I product coming off a successful 2026 campaign in Indonesia's IBL.
