The Philippine Men’s National Team fell short of securing a spot in the AFC Asian Cup after playing to a 1-1 draw with Tajikistan in their final Group A qualifier at Hisor Central Stadium in Dushanbe.

Needing a win to clinch qualification, the Filipinos were instead forced to settle for a point, ending their campaign with 14 points—level with Tajikistan but ultimately losing out on goal difference, finishing second in the group.

This marks the Philippines' failure to return to the continental tournament, a competition they last reached in 2019, having secured qualification with a victory over Tajikistan in Manila back in 2018.

Raphael Obermair made an instant impact in his international debut, putting the Philippines ahead in the 19th minute.

The midfielder timed his run perfectly to meet a cross from Randy Schneider on the right wing and finished calmly with a low strike into the far corner.

However, Tajikistan responded just before halftime, with Shereddin Boboev taking advantage of space outside the box and firing a shot that deflected slightly before slipping past goalkeeper Kevin Ray Hansen to equalize.

In the second half, both teams pushed for the winning goal.

The Philippines came close in the 85th minute, with Jesper Nyholm forcing a chance, and Jarvey Gayoso had a late opportunity in stoppage time but couldn’t keep his volley on target.

With their hopes of reaching the Asian Cup dashed, the Philippines will now shift their focus to the ASEAN Hyundai Cup 2026, set to take place from July to August.
