Pasig escapes in OT, Biñan routs Imus in MPBL action
Pasig and Biñan registered contrasting victories on Friday to strengthen their positions in the 2026 Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) Season at the Alonte Sports Arena in Biñan, Laguna.
Pasig City survived a tough overtime battle against Sarangani 10ACT, 96-93, in the second game, while host team Biñan dominated Imus, 131-76, in the nightcap to continue its surge in the round-robin elimination phase of the 28-team tournament.
Down 90-85 in overtime, Pasig mounted an 11-3 closing run in the final 3:18 behind the heroics of John Felix Corpuz to claim its fourth straight victory and improve to 5-1.
The 6-foot-1 Corpuz, a 24-year-old product of Immaculada Concepcion College, delivered Pasig’s final four points, including a turnaround jumper with 31 seconds left that sealed the win.
Warlo Batac once again led Pasig with 23 points, 14 rebounds, and four assists, while Jacob Galicia posted 18 points and 11 rebounds. Jerome Garcia contributed 14 points, four rebounds, and two assists, and local standout Marc Tamayo recorded a double-double of 10 points and 10 boards.
Sarangani fell to 1-8 despite Danny Marilao’s impressive outing of 22 points, 10 rebounds, and four blocks. Leland Estacio added 15 points, five rebounds, five assists, and two steals, while Lars Sunga chipped in 12 points, eight rebounds, and three assists. Migs Pascual and Alex Desoyo each finished with 11 points.
Marilao forced overtime after sinking a game-tying triple with 13.6 seconds remaining in regulation to knot the score at 85-all.
In the main game, Biñan put on an offensive masterclass by shooting 53-of-100 from the field and building a lead as large as 58 points, 127-69, en route to its third consecutive win and a 6-3 record.
Pamboy Raymundo sparked the blowout with an explosive 18-point third quarter, all coming from beyond the arc, as Biñan widened the gap to 106-60 and handed Imus its seventh loss in nine games.
Veteran Carlo Lastimosa paced Biñan with 20 points, while rookie Nic Cabanero earned Best Player honors after posting 19 points, 10 rebounds, and two assists.
Kenny Roger Rocacurva added 15 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists, while Ryan Sual and Poypoy Actub contributed 11 points each.
Jordan Rios led Imus with 22 points, 14 rebounds, five steals, and four assists. Dylan Darbin scored 14 points, while Joewish Garcia and John Russel Fuentes chipped in 11 points apiece.
The MPBL returns on Saturday at the One Arena in Cainta with Caloocan taking on Ilagan Isabela at 4 p.m., Zamboanga facing Abra at 6 p.m., and Valenzuela meeting Quezon Province at 8 p.m.
