Official | Hamburg bring Southampton striker Damion Downs back to the Bundesliga
Southampton striker Damion Downs has been loaned to Hamburg (HSV) for six months, with the deal officially confirmed. The USMNT international returns to the Bundesliga, and according to Sport Bild, the loan includes a €10 million purchase option for HSV.
If the reported option fee is accurate, it would allow Downs to return to Germany for a sum similar to what Köln received when selling him last autumn. His move comes after a brief spell abroad with limited playing time, potentially leading to a permanent return.
HSV secured the signing despite internal administrative challenges, including the unexpected resignation of board member for sport Stefan Kuntz. Sporting director Claus Costa and CFO Dr. Eric Huwer managed the transfer window and successfully outcompeted interest from Werder Bremen to finalize the deal.
In statements, Huwer emphasized the effort to convince Downs and highlighted the club's strengths, while Costa noted that Downs fills a squad need early in the window, bringing Bundesliga experience, physical attributes, and a profile that fits the team's tactical requirements.
Downs expressed enthusiasm about joining HSV, citing positive discussions with the sporting directors and eagerness to contribute on the pitch and compete again at the highest level in Germany.
