The NBA playoff bracket sets the path to the Larry O’Brien Trophy. It rewards teams for strong regular-season play and brings the excitement fans love. After 82 games, teams earn their spots in a bracket that stays the same, no matter what upsets happen.

The Foundation of Seeding

The league is divided into the Eastern and Western Conferences. In each conference, the top six teams automatically make the playoffs, based mostly on their winning percentage. If teams have the same record, tiebreakers start with head-to-head results, then look at division standings and conference win percentages.

The Play-In Tournament

Before the usual 16-team bracket is set, the Play-In Tournament decides the last two playoff spots in each conference. Teams ranked seventh through tenth take part. First, the seventh and eighth seeds play for the No. 7 spot. The loser then plays the winner of the ninth vs. tenth game to decide the No. 8 seed. This setup gives teams on the edge a chance to make the playoffs.

The Best-of-Seven Format

After the bracket is set, the first round follows a set structure:

• The No. 1 seed faces the No. 8 seed.

• The No. 2 seed faces the No. 7 seed.

• The No. 3 seed faces the No. 6 seed.

• The No. 4 seed faces the No. 5 seed.

Each playoff series uses a best-of-seven format with a 2-2-1-1-1 home-court setup. The higher seed hosts Games 1, 2, 5, and 7. Teams need four wins to move on. Unlike some other leagues, the NBA keeps the bracket fixed, so the winner of the 1 vs. 8 series always plays the winner of the 4 vs. 5 series in the Conference Semifinals.

Advancing to the Finals

Winners of the Conference Semifinals play in the Conference Finals to decide each conference champion. Those champions then face off in the NBA Finals. Home-court advantage in the Finals goes to the team with the better regular-season record, so early wins can make a difference in June.

Navigating the Path to the Championship

The bracket is designed to be fair but tough. Since there is no reseeding, everyone knows the possible matchups from the beginning. Top seeds get home-court advantage and usually face easier opponents at first, but the best-of-seven format gives lower seeds a chance to build momentum and go far.
