Fuel Masters Aim for Back-to-Back Wins, FiberXers Seek to Derail Momentum
Phoenix enters Sunday's Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Season 50 Commissioner’s Cup showdown with high spirits, looking to keep their momentum going as they face a determined Converge squad at the SMART Araneta Coliseum.
Tip-off is at 5:15 p.m., with the Fuel Masters riding the wave of confidence after becoming the first team to defeat Rain or Shine, securing an 87-83 victory last Tuesday as the previously undefeated squad finally faltered.
That win marked Phoenix's second straight victory, their first back-to-back wins since the early stages of the tournament when they started 2-0. With a 5-3 record, they remain in contention for a Top Four finish, which would earn them a twice-to-beat advantage in the quarterfinals.
Another win would keep their playoff aspirations alive, though they know the challenge ahead won’t be easy. They’ll be up against Converge, fresh off a 97-92 upset of TNT and Bol Bol, which gave the FiberXers their second victory in three games.
Coach Delta Pineda's squad, now 3-6, is still fighting for a playoff spot, sitting at 10th place behind Terrafirma, who holds the head-to-head advantage. Converge's path to the postseason looks tough, but star big man Justin Arana insists they’re taking it one game at a time.
“We just need to focus on one game at a time. We have three more games, and we’ll take each one as it comes because it’s do-or-die for us,” Arana said. “We can’t rush, we need to play as a team.”
According to the sportsbook, Converge enters as the favorite by -3.5 points, with the over/under total set at 205.5 points.
In the second game of the day at 7:30 p.m., Ginebra will face Titan Ultra, with the crowd favorites heavily favored to win.
TigerScore places Ginebra as a -22 point favorite, with the over/under at 209.0. This is no surprise given Coach Tim Cone's team is on a four-game winning streak, including a hard-fought 115-108 victory over Blackwater in their last outing.
Meanwhile, Titan Ultra, who has been competitive but is currently on a three-game losing streak, will look to bounce back after their most recent loss to Macau, 119-107, which handed the guest team their first win of the season.
