Frauen-Bundesliga Review: Bayern top at Christmas, HSV and Jena in the relegation zone
FC Bayern Munich Frauen concluded 2025 with a 3-0 away victory against Leverkusen, maintaining their six-point lead at the top of the Frauen-Bundesliga. Despite an early missed penalty by Pernille Harder, Bayern secured the win with a first-half goal from Franziska Kett and late penalties from Momoko Tanikawa and Georgia Stanway. The team enters the winter break with a formidable +50 goal difference.
Bayern recently extended the contracts of key players Pernille Harder, Magdalena Eriksson, and Glódís Perla Viggósdóttir until 2028. However, striker Lea Schüller is set to depart for Manchester United in January, having been an emotional figure in her final game for the club after several prolific seasons.
Second-placed Wolfsburg, led by Alexandra Popp, kept pace with a 3-1 win over Hamburger SV, marking their fourth consecutive league victory. Popp scored twice to tie for the league's scoring lead, while Kessya Bussy added a late goal.
In the race for European qualification, Werder Bremen's 3-0 loss to Freiburg tightened the standings. Hoffenheim and Eintracht Frankfurt capitalized with big wins, as Selina Cerci and Nicole Anyomi continued their strong scoring form. A third-place finish secures a spot in the UEFA Women's Champions League qualifiers.
At the bottom of the table, Carl Zeiss Jena and Hamburger SV occupy the automatic relegation spots, each with only one win this season. In other matches, Köln and Union Berlin earned narrow away victories.
The league will resume on January 23, 2026, with key fixtures including Wolfsburg at Jena and Bayern hosting Leipzig.
